I know a lot of cat owners that think it is necessary to protect their furniture, but there are easy solutions and your cat does not have to live in pain.
Provide many scratching posts all over the house. If your couch is a favorite put a scratching post right in front of it.
Another simple solution is to put two way tape on the favorite area. It works.
Declawing is against the law in many states!
